1Formation: haya + participle

Present subjunctive of haber (haya, hayas, haya, hayamos, hayáis, hayan) plus the participle.

  • que yo haya hablado — that I have spokenhaya + participle
  • que nosotros hayamos comido — that we have eaten

2Trigger in the main clause

Used after expressions of wish, doubt or emotion, usually introduced by que.

  • Espero que hayas comido. — I hope you have eaten.wish triggers subjunctive
  • Dudo que haya venido. — I doubt that he has come.

3Completed action

Expresses an action already finished before the reference point, often linked to the present.

  • Me alegro de que hayas venido. — I'm glad that you have come.
  • Es raro que no hayan dicho nada. — It's odd that they haven't said anything.

4Participle stays fixed

Only haber changes with the person; the participle never changes.

  • que tú hayas hecho — that you have donehecho stays the same
  • que ellos hayan hecho — that they have done

5Irregular participles

Some verbs have an irregular participle, e.g. decir → dicho, hacer → hecho.

  • No creo que haya dicho eso. — I don't think he has said that.dicho, not decido

Examples

  • Ojalá hayas dormido bien. — I hope you have slept well.
  • No creo que hayan estado aquí. — I don't think they have been here.
  • Es posible que haya sido un error. — It's possible that it has been a mistake.
  • Me sorprende que hayáis podido venir. — I'm surprised that you have been able to come.
