1SER: identity, origin, profession

Ser states who or what someone is: name, origin, nationality and profession.

  • Soy profesor.I am a teacher.profession → ser
  • Ella es de México.She is from Mexico.origin → ser

2SER: time, material, possession

Ser states time, date and weekday, plus material and owner.

  • Son las tres.It is three o'clock.time → ser
  • La silla es de madera.The chair is made of wood.material → ser
  • El móvil es de Ana.The phone is Ana's.possession → ser

3SER: lasting characteristics

Ser describes inherent traits: character, looks, size and color.

  • Mi hermano es alto y simpático.My brother is tall and nice.nature → ser
  • La nieve es blanca.Snow is white.inherent color → ser

4ESTAR: location and position

Estar states where someone or something is located (exception: events use ser).

  • Madrid está en España.Madrid is in Spain.location → estar
  • ¿Dónde estás?Where are you?position → estar

5ESTAR: states, feelings, progressive

Estar states temporary conditions, feelings and the progressive (estar + gerund).

  • Estoy cansado.I am tired.state → estar
  • Estamos comiendo.We are eating.progressive → estar

6Adjectives that change meaning

Some adjectives change meaning: ser = trait, estar = state/result.

  • La clase es aburrida.The class is boring.trait → ser
  • Estoy aburrido.I am bored.feeling → estar
  • El plátano está verde.The banana is unripe.state → estar
