61Accent in (in)direct questions
In direct and indirect questions all question words always carry a written accent.
- ¿Dónde vives? — Where do you live?
- No sé cómo se llama. — I don't know what his name is.indirect question
2qué vs. cuál
qué asks for a definition/kind; cuál(es) selects from a set ('which one of').
- ¿Qué quieres? — What do you want?
- ¿Cuál prefieres, el rojo o el azul? — Which do you prefer, the red or the blue?selection
3Before a noun usually qué
Directly before a noun Spanish usually uses qué (= 'which/what'), not cuál.
- ¿Qué libro lees? — Which book are you reading?
- ¿Qué color te gusta más? — Which colour do you like best?
4Number agreement
quién/cuál have plurals quiénes/cuáles; cuánto agrees in gender and number.
- ¿Quiénes son ellos? — Who are they?plural
- ¿Cuántas hermanas tienes? — How many sisters do you have?fem. plural
5por qué vs. porque
por qué (two words, accent) asks 'why'; porque (one word) answers 'because'.
- ¿Por qué lloras? — Why are you crying?
- Lloro porque estoy triste. — I'm crying because I'm sad.answer
6Exclamations with ¡Qué…!
¡Qué + adjective/noun! expresses surprise; with noun + adjective often add 'más/tan'.
- ¡Qué bonito! — How nice!
- ¡Qué día tan largo! — What a long day!noun + tan
