Rules
51Comparative: more/less ... than
más/menos + adjective + que expresses an unequal comparison.
- María es más alta que Juan. — María is taller than Juan.
- Este libro es menos interesante que el otro. — This book is less interesting than the other.
- Tengo más de veinte euros. — I have more than twenty euros.before a number: de not que
2Equality: tan ... como
tan + adjective + como means "as ... as"; with nouns use tanto/-a/-os/-as ... como.
- Pedro es tan rápido como su hermano. — Pedro is as fast as his brother.
- Tengo tantos amigos como tú. — I have as many friends as you.tantos agrees with noun
3Superlative: el/la más ...
Definite article + más/menos + adjective; "of/in" becomes de.
- Es la chica más inteligente de la clase. — She is the smartest girl in the class.
- Son los días más largos del año. — They are the longest days of the year.
4Irregular: mejor, peor, mayor, menor
bueno→mejor, malo→peor, grande→mayor, pequeño→menor; they replace más + adjective.
- Este restaurante es mejor que aquel. — This restaurant is better than that one.
- Mi hermano mayor vive en Madrid. — My older brother lives in Madrid.mayor = older
- La comida es peor hoy. — The food is worse today.
5Absolute superlative: -ísimo
The ending -ísimo/-a/-os/-as means "very/extremely" without comparison; it agrees.
- La paella está buenísima. — The paella is extremely tasty.
- Las casas son carísimas. — The houses are extremely expensive.drop final vowel
